Written in Blood: A dark and sensual, award winning, romantic suspense.
Lyndi Crisdean is assigned one of the hardest cases in her career as a defense attorney. A serial murder case. Investigating is Alek Trevian, the lead investigator for the district attorney, and a handsome and supremely dangerous man. Lyndi finds herself in over her head when she chooses desire for Alek over common sense. If they're caught, Lyndi will lose everything she's worked for. Circumstances beyond her control pull her toward Alek, for he turns out to be the only one who can help when threats start to mount against her. Lyndi may be the key Alek needs to bring down a murderous cult running loose in his city. When her beach house is broken into and a man begins to tail Lyndi, Alek can't help but reason Lyndi may be next on the cult's hitlist. The question is, will he discover the identity of the cult, keep her safe, and still win the case against the serial killer she's defending, all while losing a battle against the strong, untamable desire she alone ignites within him?

I’m not a big fan of suspense romance, but give me some hot sex and I’ll try almost anything. To clarify, I don’t think it’s hot if the guy(s) and the girl just have the right parts to stuff together. I need some kind of connection–even if it’s I hate you but I want you bad–and the more drawn out the sexual tension (aka-wanna do it but the wrong stuff keeps popping up) the better.
Elaina Lee brought that connection, that tension, and wound it through every page, never cutting the reader any slack. Since this book was suspense, I prepared myself to read through a lot of set up before getting to anything interesting, but the author used the style I like best in every genre and rarely see in this one. From page one there’s movement, dialogue, and whatever the reader needs to be ‘told’ is done in as few words as possible. In my opinion, this style can give you a story just as complex as those long-winded ones, without making your eyes glaze.
Now, back to the sex. Raw, passionate, gritty, kinky–you get a nice dash of each before getting to the slow I-love-you stuff. And the interactions before and after kept it real. All in all, I think my favorite part of this story was getting to know Lyndi and Alek and feeling like they were people I could meet. It’s rare that I don’t sneer a little while reading a story and think to myself, ‘Well, aren’t you perfect’. The decisions of the heroine are often justified in such a superficial way, I can’t help but hate her a little. But the mistakes Lyndi makes are genuine and the author doesn’t twist things to make excuses for her.
Which made me a lot more interested in finding out what Lyndi would do about it.
I can’t tell you much more without spoiling anything, but I will say this. The end blew me away and brought this story from a four to a five. I initially planned on giving it a four because I didn’t want to rate it too high without good reason. The intense ending gave me just that.
If you like a romance with an amazing story, you’ll love Written in Blood
