Black Lace: erotic fiction for women.
When vibrant, forty-something widow Annie Conroy spies her new neighbours having kinky sex in their back garden, she decides it's time that she too woke up and smelt the erotic roses. And where better to begin her daring adventures than the luxurious Waverley Grange Country Hotel, and its hidden den of iniquity: the chintz-clad but wickedly pervy Suite Seventeen? Under the stern but playful eye of exotic master Valentino, Annie quickly discovers the shocking hidden depths of her own sensuality, and surrenders herself body and soul to his outrageous games of power. But when the Waverley's entire future hangs in the balance, and Annie has the means to help save it, dare she gamble on going one step further... and giving her heart to the mysterious man who's come to control her?

This story is about Annie Conroy, a middle aged widow, exploring several different kinds of kink. There’s a lot more to the story, she’s also rich and has the power to save the Waverly Grange Country Hotel where the illustrious Suite Seventeen is located, but the plot didn’t draw me in as much as the richly developed characters. And the descriptions are amazing.
I really didn’t expect to like this story–I’m picky about contemporary and have a hard time relating to older characters who’ve lived through more than I. But Valentino made the story for me. Because of him, this book sits with my favourites of the genre (most of which are written by Cherise Sinclair).
When you first meet the man, he’s dressed in drag. Nothing against people in that lifestyle, but cross dressing isn’t my thing. I thought I’d hate it right then and there, but Valentino was fascinating. Everything he does has a reason, most often involving either his pleasure or someone else’s, and he makes no apologies for who he is. The erotic scenes are so much more thrilling when he’s involved and I found myself looking forward to the times the main character would get to see him.
If you’re not easily offended, I would definitely recommend this book. And if you are…well, you might want to try it anyway. Portia Da Costa is talented enough to make you question what you consider normal, and tempt you to cross the lines.
